Inside the Charming Country Bungalow Dolly Parton Used to Call Home

The delightful Dolly Parton started her country music career at just thirteen years old, and moved to Nashville the day after graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964. She became a successful songwriter, and eventually a hit artist in her own right. Decades later, Dolly Parton is still writing and performing, as well as raising money for multiple charitable causes. Naturally, the country queen has amassed plenty of property – let’s check out the charming West Hollywood bungalow Dolly used to call home.

Dolly Parton used to live in this compact and almost compound-like cottage in West Hollywood. The extensively fenced and gated property was listed at 1091 square feet, and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. For an A list celeb, that’s pretty petite!

The “Coat of Many Colors” singer purchased this cute bungalow in 2007 for the cool price of $1.2 million. Hey – it is Hollywood after all. When listed some years later, the entertainer was asking for $1.4 million. Good investment!

In order to enter Dolly Parton’s former West Hollywood bungalow, guests would pass through a private garden area towards this arch. The home has several unique details, including this beautiful bronze sun above the entryway.

Turquoise lamps hang on either side of the house’s front entrance, giving the whole area a playful desert vibe. The multiple plants and colorful pots reveal the warmth and friendliness of the singer’s home, which continues throughout each room. For some it might be cluttered, but for us, it’s utterly charming.

We’ve already seen that Dolly Parton likes light wood window shutters, and who can blame her? Honestly, these shutters remind us of an idyllic fairytale scene where animated birds chirp outside a window as a princess sings sweetly inside. That’s what Dolly’s life is like, right?

This kitchen certainly nods to the 1950s, especially with its pastel mint cabinets. This color doesn’t seem to pop up elsewhere, but we like the retro vibe it adds to this room.

Let’s take a closer look at Dolly Parton’s former kitchen from a different angle. As you can see, and as you should have expected, the singer and actress’s kitchen chairs are actually primped up with gingham seat covers. We love it!

From what we can see, the country star has a floral breadbox, some casual pink napkin rings, and a blushing hanging light fixture with multiple pink lamps. Clearly, in this country kitchen, it’s Dolly’s world and we just live in it.

When it comes to our beloved Dolly, everything is kitsch, kitsch, kitsch. When it comes to kitsch, we’re talking about things – décor, clothing, design – that could be considered tacky or tastless, but that are loved precisely because of this. It’s sort of ironic, it’s a little playful, and it completely describes everything to do with Ms. Parton.

This decking area attached to the bungalow’s master suite has pink walls, pink picture frames, and even pink borders around the windows. Truly, we could not love it more.

Presumably inspired by California’s desert weather, Dolly Parton features lots of cacti throughout her home. In this bathroom snap, you can see the playful desert themed art on the wall, and floral inspired candles and candlesticks adorning the small wooden shelf.

A cheerful pot of sunflowers by the sink adds another floral accent to the room, and the warm colors lend sunshine-y warmth. With this décor, Dolly could surely relax in a sunny California atmosphere.

Considering the amount of plants and cacti inside Dolly Parton’s country chic bungalow, it’s no surprise that there were plenty outside too. The “Tennessee Homesick Blues” singer had cacti along the front of her property, and then a hedge on top of her outer wall. This makes the house very private while retaining a friendly and warm aesthetic.

The warm Spanish colors used on the exterior of the house suit the surrounding area perfectly. Red, rust, terracotta, and salmon blend with the desert sun.

Attached to Dolly Parton’s West Hollywood bungalow is off street parking for several cars. Perhaps the country star can house one or two or her favorite Cadillacs in there. The 9 to 5 actress has loved Cadillacs ever since she first found fame. A 1997 Cadillac D’Elegance is Dolly’s favorite motor, and she kept the car for over a decade.

After donating the signed vehicle to the Hollywood Stars Car Museum, the singer moved on to a new Cadillac Escalade Hybrid.

Rather than a Southern style porch and rocking chair, Dolly Parton’s shabby chic bungalow had a patio overlooking the garden area. The quiet, decking area has two rocking chairs arranged by a tree trunk style table.

The outdoor areas in Parton’s former home offer a lot of privacy with their high walls and shady coverage. We can only imagine the delicious scent in the air wafting from the singer’s many planted flowers. As the sun goes down, this area is bound to be beautiful.

We’ve talked kitsch, now let’s talk chintz. Chintz is the name of the floral patterned design on a light, plain background that can be seen all over Dolly Parton’s former home. While some people might say this second bedroom has elements of “granny style,” we trust that the wise Ms. Parton knowingly filled her home with frilly, old fashioned country pieces.

This elaborate chintzy comforter has pink tassels and trim, with a matching cylindrical pillow. We dare you to find this in any other celebrity home.

Dolly Parton’s cute kitschy style continues in this bathroom. Unlike most white and sterile looking bathrooms, this room pops with lilac and mint green tiles and more warm wood fixtures.

Living as a child in the Smoky Mountains, Parton couldn’t enjoy luxuries like a hot bath. She remembers, “In the winter time, we just had a pan of water and we’d wash down as far as possible, and we’d wash up as far as possible. Then, when somebody cleared the room, we’d wash ‘possible.’”

One of the most unusual features of Dolly Parton’s country style Hollywood home is the renovated detached one-car garage. Rather than housing a Cadillac, this property was converted into a guest cottage. As you can see, the building holds a bedroom, a kitchenette, and bathroom facilities behind shutters.

We’re not sure we’d want to use a toilet right in the middle of someone’s living room and kitchen, but we guess it’s a good option in a pinch. Naturally, this room is also decorated with fresh flowers.

As well as the various patios on Dolly Parton’s property, her cute country style home also features a tree covered courtyard. With luscious trees, multiple planters, and yet more hanging baskets, this outdoors area is an oasis in the Hollywood desert.

High trellised walls offer privacy while the country star and her friends or family enjoy drinks, dinner, and music in the courtyard. Parton’s patio furniture features warm burnt orange chair covers on a white wire table and chair set.

This adorable bungalow is a gated adobe style home with elements of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. The warm terracotta exterior, arched windows and wooden shutters are all typical of this style, which is based on homes built by Spanish colonizers in the southwest USA.

As well as the Spanish Colonial touches, the country star has warmed up the property with burnt orange fabrics, multicolored upholstery and floral prints galore. The home is also overflowing with greenery, as shown in this image.

You may have noticed so far that Ms. Parton likes to collect and display various bits and bobs. A fan of trinkets, vases, interesting candlesticks and little boxes, the singer songwriter certainly doesn’t have a less is more mentality.

Speaking about her affinity for holding onto things, Parton remarked, “You should see my house […] I had a whole warehouse called the ‘Arts and Cr**’ building, because I can’t throw anything away…because I know how much people spent time on it.”

We’re obsessed with the shabby chic vibe of Dolly Parton’s country style bungalow. Yes, the property may be moments away from the Sunset Strip, but inside it’s all about cozy kitsch and kicking back. This room pops with light wooden window shutters, a soft pink couch, and a smattering of mismatched pillows.

Dolly Parton has never subscribed to the idea that less is more, so it’s no surprise that her home features lots of embroidery, like this striking printed armchair.

This sitting room area is slightly more formal than the previous room but maintains Dolly’s shabby chic tastes. This room also features wooden floors, though the rug in this room is much more intricately patterned.

Of course, it’s hard to ignore the amount of distressed furniture in this room. The upright cabinet and coffee table both look purposely worse for wear, while the gold and red bureau adds a retro flair. It’s certainly eclectic, but what else would we expect?

We’ve already seen various beautiful details throughout Dolly Parton’s house, and there’s more where that came from. When the “Joshua” singer moved into the property, she remodeled it and hired an artist to hand-paint dainty floral details on the living room and kitchen tiles.

These extra touches add yet more warmth to the comfy property. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather have hand-painted floral tiles than a sterile and characterless McMansion any day.

Lest we forget, Dolly Parton is a music icon with some seriously impressive talent. It makes sense that the artist had a piano and guitar right in the center of her kitchen and living room area. What else would have pride of place?

Dolly’s eclectic tastes continue in this room, with floral chair covers, an upholstered piano stool (we love it), and even one of those wooden cabinets full of decorative plates. This house oozes the warmth of a rural Southern cabin.

We’ll admit that Dolly Parton’s former home mightn’t be to everyone’s taste. In fact, some online sites referred to the property as a “fixer upper,” rather than admiring its kitsch and shabby chic warmth.

Well, “Backwoods Barbie” Dolly Parton famously declared that “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap,” proving the playful spirit that she approaches life with. Indeed, many have noticed how Parton uses aesthetics as a way of creating a world of her own.

Here’s the master suite in Dolly Parton’s former West Hollywood bungalow. As you can see, the bedroom is in keeping with the rest of the home, with its embroidery, floral patterns and wooden furniture.

This main bedroom has two closets, a built-in vanity area, a pop up TV, and French doors that open onto a private deck. We imagine the delightful Dolly strumming her guitar on the bed, stopping to powder her nose, and then stepping out onto the deck with some ice tea.

So far, we haven’t mentioned the mysterious Mr. Parton, which is in keeping with his extra private persona. Dolly Parton met Carl Dean when she was 18 years old. They married in secret to avoid the press, with only a minister, his wife, and Dolly’s mother in attendance.

Carl Dean lives a simple life, and doesn’t attend events with his wife. Speaking on their over 50 year union, Parton said, “We’re really very proud of our marriage. It’s the first for both of us. And the last.”

We know that this cute California bungalow was the home of Dolly Parton for some time, but the property actually has even more of a Hollywood history. Apparently, this was also the childhood home of actress Natalie Wood.

Wood started acting as a child, and her career came to symbolize modern American womanhood. Tragically, the West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause actress passed away under suspicious circumstances in 1981, aged 43. The case is still open, with her ex-husband named as a person of interest.

Since Dolly Parton has moved out of her West Hollywood home, the property has been purchased and redecorated. While it no longer has pink walls and embroidered fabrics, the home does still have some remnants of its fabulous former owner, including this signature in the concrete.

The West Hollywood home is actually now an Airbnb, so you could step into Dolly’s shoes and enjoy the area yourself. The home still has lots of plants, but now has a grand piano and Calvin Klein bed linens.

Despite having her home in California, and several others across the USA, Dolly Parton refuses to permanently live in any state other than Tennessee. Raised in Locust Ridge, the Steel Magnolias actress misses the rolling mountains that she was raised in when she spends time elsewhere. In fact, she purchased and preserved one of her childhood homes.

Parton told Rolling Stone, “That ‘old country’ in me says, ‘What in the world are you doing walking on this concrete when you can be rolling in the grass?”

So where do Dolly Parton and her husband spend the majority of their time? Well, the pair reside in a large estate near Brentwood, Tennessee, named the Willow Lake Plantation. As you can see from this aerial shot, the home has a fetching red roof that gives the property a homely farm feel.

Dolly Dean (to use her married name) has over ten structures on this sprawling estate, as well as a tennis court, a swimming pool, and a chapel.

Of course, as a successful musician, Dolly Parton has spent many years on the road while touring. Interestingly, the country star doesn’t chose to stay in hotels and instead sleeps in her own tour bus, lovingly named the “Gypsy Wagon.”

The singer has said, “I live on my tour bus. Well it’s great, it’s got everything. There’s a place for all my show wigs of course. On the other side I’ve got room for my show clothes, and I have my kitchen. It is a home.”

Throughout her illustrious career, the dazzling Dolly Parton has written and recorded numerous long-lasting hits. Her self-penned track “Jolene” has been recorded by numerous other artists, and won Parton a Grammy Award when she rereleased it in 2016 with acapella group Pentatonix.

Perhaps her most famous song is “I Will Always Love You,” written for fellow country star and co-host Porter Wagoner. When Whitney Houston covered the track in 1992, it became one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Not content with being a hugely successful musician, Dolly Parton also worked as an actress. Her first feature film role was in comedy movie 9 to 5, alongside Hollywood royalty Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin (pictured). Ever the multi-talented star, Parton wrote the famous theme song while on set, using her long acrylic nails as percussion.

The blonde bombshell then starred in two further movies, before appearing in Steel Magnolias in 1989 alongside Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine.

We couldn’t wrap up this article about country star Dolly Parton’s West Hollywood home without mentioning her Smoky Mountains amusement park, Dollywood. The theme park has over 2.5 million guests per year, and includes Splash Country – a water park – the DreamMore Resort, and the Smoky Mountain Cabins.

The amazing location is in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and boasts rollercoasters and rides, stores and shows, and food and festivals. The Rhinestone actress is involved in running the park, and is referred to by employees as the “Dreamer in Chief.”

While Dolly Parton and husband Carl Dean didn’t have any children, the singer considers herself a motherly figure to many kids. The singer and her husband raised several of her younger siblings, and her nieces and nephews refer to her as “Aunt Granny.”

Parton has said, “I’ve loved their kids just like they’re my grandkids, and now I’ve got great-grand-kids! Now I’m GeeGee, which is great-granny.” The “Two Doors Down” singer is also godmother to fellow Tennessee born star Miley Cyrus.

It would be remiss if we closed our tour through Dolly’s former home and didn’t mention the singer’s multiple charitable efforts. As a way of reaching out and connecting with children across the world, Parton created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library which sends one book per month to children from their time of birth until kindergarten.
